Quilts, quilts, quilts!

I didn't want to make the first post super long, so I split them up! I also finished the quilts for my nieces just in time for Christmas!! Here are a couple more photos for you.

Rachel loved her quilt! The green and pink was inspired by Rachel's nursery, and I loved the flowery fabric. Thanks to Amanda, my sister in law, for the beautiful pictures!

More after the jump...

Eden's quilt was a little more difficult, but once I got the supplies together, I finished it in way less time than Rachel's. I had a hard time finding the fabrics for this quilt that I liked, and it was the first time I experimented with a mix of flannels and cottons for a quilt. My sister in law Sarah asked if she could use it for Eden's tummy time, and I was overjoyed!

For the quilts, I went very simple. I used a 6 inch square pattern for the blocks, and I pinned and stitched them all together in a continuous line. I bought 1.5 yards of whatever fabric I wanted for the backing; I primarily choose quilter's cotton for this, because it tends to hold it's shape while sewing as well as the color after you wash it a few times. For the blocks, I usually pick a primary color for half of the blocks, and then I choose two complementary pattern fabrics to give it some depth.

So a basic breakdown for supplies:

Fabric:
1.5 yards of cotton for the backing
1 yard for the primary block color
.5 yards of the other 2 block fabrics

Other supplies:
1 package of satin edging
Coordinating thread
Cotton Batting (I prefer the FiberFil, because it rolls out nicely, and is easy to store)

I pinned the squares together all at one time, and then just sewed them straight down the line. It is probably the simplest quilt to make, and it is so wonderful to know you handcrafted a gift that will be both useful and loved :)

Happy crafting!
