Baby hat and mittens

Yep, I am going crochet crazy. I am getting a head start on Christmas presents for all the little ones in our life (and those soon to be). I made an earflap hat and matching mitten pattern. I used a soft wool yarn that felts nicely, but I didn't felt any piece too much because I wanted the stretchiness to stay in each piece. The patterns are after the jump.

EARFLAP HAT:
Start with a magic ring: Ch 1, 5 sc.
Ch 3, 2 dc in each stitch. (10)
Ch 3, 2 dc in each stitch. (20)
Ch 3, *2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in next dc. Repeat from * around. (30)
Ch 3, *2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in next 2 dc. Repeat from * around. (40)
Ch 3, *2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in next 3 dc. Repeat from * around. (50)
Ch 3, *2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in next 4 dc. Repeat from * around. (60)

Ch 15, or to preferred length. In 2nd chain from hook, dc back to base of earflap and fasten off.

SECOND EARFLAP:
Count 10 stitches along base of hat from the beginning of one side of the first earflap. If you want, you can also fold the hat in half and eyeball it so the earflaps have slightly more space in the front than the back. It is all personal preference here. Once you find your beginning stitch, join yarn to base of hat to begin.

It's as simple as that!

MITTENS:
Start with a magic ring: Ch 1, 5 sc.
Ch 2, 2 dc in each stitch around. (10)
Ch 2, 2 dc in each stitch around. (20)

Ch 60, or until chain is long enough to fit underneath a jacket, from wrist to wrist. Leave a long tail for attaching to the other mitten later.

MITTEN 2:

Start with a magic ring: Ch 1, 5 sc.
Ch 2, 2 dc in each stitch around. (10)
Ch 2, 2 dc in each stitch around. (20)
Ch 2, *2 dc in next stitch, 1 dc in next stitch. Repeat from * around. (30)
*Ch 2, Dc in each stitch around. Repeat from * for 5 rounds, or until the mittens are long enough.
Ch 2, *Dec 1, dc in first two stitches, dc in next stitch. Repeat from * around. (20)

Fasten off. Attach the tail from the chain off the other mitten and fasten securely.

Finished product:

You are done! This is honestly one of the easiest winter sets I have ever made. Other patterns were very daunting for me to even want to try and start; I actually got the idea to write this pattern after getting frustrated with a bunch of other ones! I loved the look of the others, but being a beginner 'hooker' (ha ha), I wanted something easy and fun that was still adorable!

This tutorial has NOT been tested by anyone other than myself, so please feel free to leave helpful hints, suggestions and comments.

Happy crafting!
